[edit] Solar power

Pros:

  • No consumables: mass of power generation system is independent of energy (but not power) requirements.

Cons:

  • Power output varies periodically while in orbit due to "eclipse periods".
  • Arrays require precision orientation control for best performance, leading to mechanical complexity and reliability issues.
  • Arrays must be folded away during launch and then deployed once in orbit, leading to mechanical complexity and reliability issues.
