[edit] Summary
The purpose of this design task is to choose a shape for the CLLARE Command Module.
[edit] Inter-relations
This design task is inter-related with the following other design tasks:
- None
[edit] Background
[edit] Features/Considerations
- Maximum internal volume
- Minimum surface area
- Aerodynamic stability
- G forces experienced during reentry.
[edit] Requirements
[edit] Available Solutions
[edit] Sphere
Examples: Vostok
Pros:
- Maximum internal volume per unit of surface area (i.e. mass)
- Simplicity of aerodynamic analysis
Cons:
- No lift generation, so high g forces during reentry (but proven survivable). Could possibly be countered with a large ballute or the like?
[edit] Truncated cone with cylindrical "head"
Pros: Cons:
[edit] Cone
Pros: Cons:
Examples: Apollo
